How to Raise $25,000 for Suicide Prevention with just a Click

by Sharilee Griffiths, Director and Meagan Waite, Assistant Director - My Discovery Destination!

The goal of the Discovery Family Adventures is to encourage families to spend time together, strengthening family bonds. Research shows that family attachment is the best prevention for risky behaviors, including suicide.

Ever since the day of its inception, My Discovery Destination! has provided its Discovery Family Adventures program to each and every family FOR FREE. Part of our mission states that we “strengthen families by providing opportunities for FREE Family Fun.”

Discovery Family Adventures are chock-full of free, flexible, fun activities that help parents really connect with their children and do it with a purpose. They are all 100% FREE to every family that wants to participate and will continue to be free to families.

But nothing “free” is ever truly “free.” Someone is paying for it somewhere.

In order for My Discovery Destination! to keep the Discovery Family Adventures (and other evidence-based prevention tools) FREE to everybody, funding must come from somewhere. Did you know you can help with that? How? By voting, and helping us spread the word about our opportunity to win a $25,000 Neighborhood Assist grant to fund suicide prevention programming. Share the link https://bit.ly/assistutah and invite your friends and neighbors to vote as well. You can vote up to 10 times per day from April 27 through May 6, 2022!

How will this grant impact communities across Utah?

The Discovery Family Coalition will incorporate a new ‘I See You’ initiative into the Discovery Family Adventures and our Summer Passport Program and will provide funding to deliver Discovery Family Adventures and other evidence-based prevention tools to those who need it most in our communities at no cost.

Help us keep the Discovery Family Adventures free for everyone that wants to benefit from this unique, powerful and effective tool.

Press Release

The Discovery Family Coalition has been selected as a State Farm Neighborhood Assist® Top 200 Finalist and needs your votes!

Logan, Utah (April 25, 2022) The Discovery Family Coalition needs your help by voting for them to receive a $25,000 grant from State Farm® to help with suicide prevention efforts across the state of Utah. Starting April 27 at 12:00am ET, U.S. residents who are 18 and older with a valid email address can vote for their favorite cause at www.neighborhoodassist.com.

The Discovery Family Coalition has until May 6 at 11:59pm ET to rally votes and anyone voting is allowed up to 10 votes per day. On June 7, the top 100 vote-receiving causes will be announced at www.neighborhoodassist.com and a $25,000 grant will be awarded to each of the affiliated nonprofits. Supporters can vote for this cause at https://bit.ly/assistutah

Utah is in the top 10 states for highest suicide rates. In beautiful Cache Valley, suicide rates more than doubled in 2021. In the first two months, there were 10 COVID deaths and 13 deaths by suicide. As a result, leaders and experts gathered to discuss issues and challenges that led to the sudden increase. One of the issues that rose to the top in that meeting was a need for connection…citizens in Cache County, especially youth in our community, need to be able to connect.

Discovery Adventures help families spend quality time together connecting, laughing, bonding and initiating key conversations. They empower parents to be prevention specialists in their own homes and neighborhoods- aware and intentional in how they engage with kids to build resilience and create strong relationships. The ‘I See You’ initiative the grant will help build into the adventures will assist youth and adults in connecting the neighborhood, really SEEing each other, and acknowledging the good in each other

This grant will provide funding to deliver Discovery Adventures and other evidence-based prevention tools to 75,000+ diverse, currently under-served youth throughout Northern Utah.

A State Farm Neighborhood Assist grant will bring much-needed mental health solutions and family support to families throughout Northern Utah. The impact on a family can be immediate and profound. One mother reported her son had been seeing a counselor for years, but completely resolved his anxiety and depression within 2 months after the family started participating in the adventures.

The Adventures have the power to bring families together daily in fun, unique, natural ways that are effective, culturally appropriate, and provide opportunities for youth to engage in prosocial activities. A struggling, disconnected family can now succeed. Independently evaluated data shows that families using the adventures spend more time together, parents are more intentional in their parenting, kids are more engaged in family time and overall family outcomes are significantly improved with young people being empowered to flourish. These impacts will have generational benefits far into the future.

Sharilee Griffiths, Director of the Discovery Family Coalition, "This funding could have a tremendous impact for good on communities all across Utah. The 'I See You' initiative is designed to encourage youth and adults to really see each other-- to notice the good in those around them and to speak up and tell them what they see!'

State Farm Neighborhood Assist is a crowd-sourced philanthropic initiative that empowers communities to identify issues in their neighborhoods The State Farm Review Committee selected the top 200 finalists from 4,000 submissions.
