Ribbon/Prevention Week Hunts for Schools/PTA/PTOs: Prevention in Action!

Q: What are we actually investing in? Is it an App?

A: No! What you are investing in is an effective, evidence-based prevention program built on an App. Your investment is cover the cost of both the App and the content.

The program is built on the Goosechase App, but that is just the delivery method. The most important part of your investment is the content for each Ribbon Week and the other program elements that make it so effective. The features of the App are a great delivery method for the program content and features, but what you are investing in is much, much MORE than an App!

The app will need to be downloaded by all parents who wish to participate in the 'Adventures' so that they can access the full program.

Q: How do the 'Adventures' work?

A: Ribbon Week Hunts provide a series of fun “Adventures” for each day of the Ribbon/Prevention week. Families work together to complete the 'Adventure' and submit their 'evidence' to qualify for prizes. In addition to the 'Daily Adventure', there can be 'missions' to help the family prepare for the next days theme, meaning that there are usually 2-3 missions released each day. Missions are scheduled to release automatically, so no one has to remember to release the Adventure each day.

'Evidence' will be to either submit a text answer or submit a photo or video. All 'evidence' can be made private at your discretion (not seen in the general feed) or, as appropriate, can be visible in the feed and therefore available for everyone to see-- which is SUPER FUN! Of course, parents have already been taught how to keep anything and everything private on their end depending on their preferences.

Here are some examples of what you might expect in the different 'Hunts':

Green Ribbon Week (Pedestrian Safety):

Take a 'Safety Walk' as a family and identify any trouble areas between your home and the school. Evidence: Submit a picture of a problem area and share in the caption what you are going to do to be safe.

Find a pedestrian crossing and help your children practice making eye contact with the driver before they step into the cross walk. Evidence: Develop a 15 or 30-second ad to teach others what you learned.

Yellow/Blue (Suicide Prevention Awareness and Bullying Prevention):

Identify the difference between 'tattling' and 'telling'  Create a poster that represents this concept.

Evidence: Submit a picture of your poster.

Learn what QPR stands for and role play each letter.

Evidence: Submit a clip from your role play

Red Ribbon Week (Drug Safety):

'Teaming' Up Against Drugs Day: As a family identify who is on your team.

Evidence: take a picture/video in your team jersey

❏ 'Sock it to Drugs' Day: Wear crazy socks to school. Discuss ways you can 'sock it to drugs'.

Evidence: submit a picture/video of your crazy socks

White Ribbon Week (Online Safety):

I Have the Power!  Discuss as a family how each family member has the power to choose what to view online, and what to do if they see something they don't want to see.

Evidence: Submit a picture in your best 'I Have the Power to Choose' pose.

Online Safety Rules: Discuss as a family a list of online safety tips provided and then together create a 30-second skit to teach one of the tips you learned.

Evidence: Submit a videoclip of your 30-second skit.

Mental Health Awareness (Green Ribbon Week):

My Mental Health SELFIE! Discuss as a family what each letter of the mental health 'selfie' stands for (s stands for 'sleep', e = eat, l = light, f = fun, i = interact, e=exercise)

Evidence: Take a 'selfie' video with each family member acting out one of the letters and what it stands for.

Self-Care Options. Discuss as a family a variety of self-care options (provided) and discuss which ones you might like to try. What self-care ideas does the family have that are not listed?

Evidence: Submit a new idea for self-care that was not listed.

Q: Is this school-based or home-based?

A:  Our focus is on getting families to spend quality time together and to get parents involved in the process, so the Adventures are home-based and designed to be completed by your students and their parents/family.

We do offer suggested 'School Tie-ins' with each Ribbon Week Hunt that you can share with your teachers to use IF they want to. However, our Ribbon Week Hunts will not add to the teachers' workload.

Q: Can we use the Ribbon Week Hunts with our existing Ribbon Week plans?

A:  Yes! There is no need to drop any of your current Ribbon Week plans or traditions if it is something that you can and want to continue. You can add the Ribbon Week Hunts to existing plans for increased parent involvement and overall effectiveness of your Ribbon Week events.

Q: What are the benefits of using the Discovery Family Coalition Ribbon Week Hunts?

A: There are many benefits of using Ribbon/Prevention Week Hunts to deliver your prevention programs and other programs. Here are a few of them, not necessarily in order of importance:

→ The App provides PTA/PTO/SCHOOL/COALITION leaders with ready-made ribbon weeks that can be incorporated with very little manpower

→ The manpower that IS required is done before and after the event, meaning the leaders can focus on being a parent to their child(ren) during the event and not be so stressed out running an event that their own children are left parentless. For example, you will probably want to take a few minutes before the event to personalize the 'Hunt', and a few minutes after the Hunt to give out the prizes.

→ The Discovery Hunts get families involved in the process and the conversations, which is really where these conversations should be taking place! The Adventures are family-centered, school supported

→ We have partners in place to help provide prizes, in addition to prizes we provide!

→ The Prevention Weeks keep families connected to your PTA programs from one event to the next. Instead of 'starting over' each time to get the word out about a program, families remain connected and you can send a notification about the next program directly to their phone.

→ Prevention Week Hunts keep the conversation going! For each 'Hunt' you invest in we will provide monthly follow-up 'Adventures' to keep the conversation going all year-round. This ensures that parents have a fun, easy, comfortable way to have important conversations with their children all year round-- even during the summer!

→  The Discovery Hunts also offer an alternative way to contact families. You can send messages to everyone connected, or individually to specific teams as necessary (to notify of prizes, share safety concerns, etc.)You can send out occasional comments/messages/discussion topics any time of the year as relevant. For example, when you have your PTA meetings or fundraising or carnival coming up, send out a quick reminder to all of the families that are connected.

→ Speaking of fundraising, the Discovery Hunts can be used as a fundraiser. There are LOTS of local businesses that would be happy to support your school.  We can show you how to use the Discovery Hunts for fundraising, or just use them for the Hunts-- it's totally up to you!

Q: Prizes are included. What prizes can we expect with the Discovery Hunt?

A: We provide the following prizes:

Pizza Party for up to 24 students for the winning classroom (as determined by the school)

$100 Family Reunion Hunt for the winning family (as determined by the school)

Family Scavenger Hunt for all participating families

Working with our partners we may provide additional prizes.

We also encourage the school to provide some of the prizes that we can't, but they can!

Lunch with the principal

Early release

Extra long recess

Recognition at a school event

Coalition's could provide prizes like:

Lunch with the Mayor

Prizes donated by coalition partners

Recognition at an upcoming event

Q: What is the investment level required to participate?

A: Use of the Goosechase 'App' is normally $500 for a one week event. However, the real value lies in the ready-made content, follow-up, built-in partnerships and prizes, and benefits added by being a part of the bigger picture.

The regular cost is $1000 for each Hunt. However, the more Safety Weeks you invest in the more cost effectively we can deliver them.

If you invest in 2 hunts you can get a 25% discount ($750 per Hunt)

If you invest in 3 hunts you can get a 50% discount  ($500 per Hunt)

If you invest in 4 Hunts you can get a 75% discount, (ONLY $250 per Hunt!) meaning you can get 4 Hunts for the price of 1!

In addition, you can earn BONUS Hunts for doing easy things like:

→ Scheduling your budget approval meeting with Back-to-School Night

→ Making payment on time

→ Getting 75% of your families connected to the Hunts

This is a no brainer!

Q: Do we have payment options?

A: We have many options to help your group ensure that your families can enjoy the benefits of these important ribbon weeks:

Option 1: Pay from your Budget!

Option 2: No funding in your budget for it this year? Invite a business or a few businesses to sponsor the Ribbon Week(s) for you. (We will provide you with a letter template). The sponsoring business will be recognized throughout the 'Hunt'

Examples:

→ Ask a local doctor to sponsor your Yellow/Blue (suicide/bullying prevention) Week

→ Ask a shoe store or health focused store to sponsor your Green (pedestrian safety) Week

→ Ask a pharmacy to sponsor your Red (drug safety) Week

→ Ask a computer store to sponsor your White (online safety) Week

→ Ask a therapist to sponsor your Green (mental health awareness) Week

Option 3:  Use the 'Pay It Forward' method! How does that work?

→ Pay for the first Hunt out of your Budget

→ During the Hunt release a 'Pay It Forward' Adventure inviting parents to purchase a fundraising item to help cover the cost of the next Hunt.

Q: (PTA/PTOs) Money from the 2023-2024 budget can't be spent until it is approved. Do we have options?

A: We understand that you have to have your annual budget approved before you can start spending it. You do have some GREAT options:

❏ You can wait until the budget is approved to get started. You may want to hold your first PTA meeting as early as possible, possibly at Back-to-School night. If you choose to do this we will throw in a Back-to-School Hunt that can make 'attending' the PTA meeting part of the Hunt that families can get points for. Start the year off on a FUN note to let families see that this year's PTA is going to be AWESOME!

❏ You can ask a local business to sponsor the first prevention hunt for you. There are plenty of businesses out there that would love to get some positive exposure with your parents by supporting something that matters to them. They can work directly with us so that their sponsorship comes through us rather than your official budget.

❏ If it's just a matter of getting through the budget approval and you are 95% sure that the expenditure will be approved we will work with you on payment. We can get things started now and you can pay after your budget is approved (no later than Sept 15)

Q: Do you have a flyer or materials we can share with our board?
