The IB Core
The IB Diploma is granted to students who earn 24 points and fulfill the three core components of IB: TOK, EE, and CAS. In order to earn 24 points, students must earn at least 9 SL (Standard Level course) points and 12 HL (Higher Level course) points from IB courses. These points are earned from the final end-of-year IB course grade, compiled from the various assessments throughout the course.
Theory of Knowledge (TOK) is a course taken in junior and senior year. For this course, students must complete an exhibition and a prescribed title essay (PTE).
The Extended Essay (EE) is a 4,000 word, self-guided research paper in a subject of choice.
The TOK and EE core components can contribute up to 3 additional points toward the IB Diploma.
The Points System:
IB students receive a grade from 1-7 in each of their IB classes based on their papers, IA, and other components. There are a total of 45 points available, 42 points of which can be gained from 6 IB classes and 3 extra points that can be gained from TOK and the EE.
These are divided between Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL) courses. Students are required to have 12/21 points for HL courses and 9/21 points from SL courses.
