"dance like nobody is watching"
D'Hercy Dance Co has been providing dance classes for pre-school, youth, teens and adults in the Vancouver area for over 40 years. Founded in 1990 in Vancouver by Michelle Hersey, the company creates opportunities for children to explore and develop their potential as artists and thinkers on their own terms. D'Hercy empowers children to achieve their individual best. Group cooperation and leadership are fostered in a supportive and inclusive atmosphere.
Owner/Operator Michelle Hersey, the head instructor at D'Hercy Dance Co, is passionate about dance and has an extensive background in dance and choreography. She has been teaching for over 40 years in the Vancouver area. Michelle has taught at Arts Umbrella, Shadbolt Centre for the Arts, the Vancouver Art Gallery and many community centres and local schools. Michelle specializes in teaching children ages 2 to 15 years old through Laban-Effort Shape principles. Michelle received her Elementary BEd from UBC in 2004 to add to her BA in Dance obtained in 1984 from SFU. She holds a certificate from the Main Dance Bridging Program obtained in 2000.
She has self-produced many interdisciplinary shows of her own work combining visual art, including film, slides, sculpture, paintings and live music with dance since 1996. She has performed with many local companies such as Edam Dance, Monique Giard Company de Dance and Metamotion. She also is an accomplished musician including playing Latin percussion learned at the Banff School of Fine Arts. She sings and is the percussionist for "Hard Candy" a 10 piece funk - 3 part harmony band. She uses all of these talents to inspire and teach children the joy of expression and creation, and the sharing of those creations with others. Michelle loves children. She loves their pure connection to the joy of their own expression. She wishes to empower them to find that and grow that in their everyday lives.
She also most recently moved to the East Coast where she is developing her own virtual studio from where classes are currently taught to 13+. She also is developing gothic/witchy clothing designs originally platformed with the Witch's Inn Creative Costumery, now morphing into Witch's Inn Creations to foster a broader platform for her creative ideas. Imagination knows no bounds on the D'Hercy Dance grounds.
