PROACTIVE OWNERSHIP
One such exemplary model of community- led environmental stewardship can be observed in a residential society in Faridabad, where residents have collectively embraced sustainable practices to curb plastic pollution. Recognising the long-term ecological consequences of single-use plastics, residents have taken proactive ownership of waste reduction and behavioural change at the grassroots level.
A dedicated group of environmentally conscious residents has spearheaded awareness campaigns focused on source segregation and responsible consumption. Clear and consistent messaging has been disseminated regarding the use of colour-coded waste bins, enabling efficient segregation of biodegradable, recyclable, and non-recyclable waste. Simultaneously, the community has actively discouraged the use of plastic carry bags, which are prominently displayed near the society’s market area and local milk booths- points of high daily consumer interaction- thereby reinforcing environmentally responsible choices through constant visual nudges.
UTENSIL BANK
Demonstrating an even deeper commitment to sustainability, the society introduced an innovative UTENSIL BANK- a community resource that allows families to borrow durable steel utensils for social gatherings and functions. This initiative directly addresses the environmental hazards posed by disposable, non-biodegradable tableware. By replacing single-use items with reusable steel utensils that can be washed, reused, and circulated within the community, the society has significantly reduced waste generation and its ecological footprint.
This initiative is a living embodiment of Dhartitva- the Indian philosophical principle denoting the capacity to sustain, bear, and uphold balance. Just as the Earth absorbs human excesses while continuing to nurture life, the residents of this society have chosen restraint over convenience and responsibility over indulgence. Their actions reflect Dhartitva in practice: sustaining the environment through conscious endurance, mindful consumption, and collective accountability.
