AIR POLLUTION
AIR POLLUTION
Faridabad's air is often polluted. The Air Quality Index (AQI) measures air quality on a scale from 0 to 500; any value over 100 is considered unhealthy.
Average AQI: Around 150-200 in recent years, sometimes hitting 300+ in winter.
Key pollutant: PM2.5 (tiny dust particles) at 80-100 micrograms per cubic meter—way above the safe limit of 5.
Simple math: Pollution spreads out like this: If a factory releases 100 units of pollution, it might drop to 50 units after 1 km, and 25 after 2 km (like halving each time). But in Faridabad's flat land, it stays high over big areas.
Causes of Destruction of Aravalli Hills and its impact on AQI: -
Quarrying for marble, limestone, and sandstone has devastated hillsides. From 2000 to 2020, over 1,000 illegal mines operated in the Aravali region, with Haryana contributing 40% of India's marble output. Ratio: For every 10 legal mines, 7-8 are illegal (70-80% unregulated extraction).
Trees are cleared for fuel and development. Ratio: Regeneration rate is 1:5 compared to destruction (5 trees lost per one planted annually in degraded areas).
Faridabad's population grew 40% from 2001 to 2021, encroaching on hills. Percentage: 30% of Haryana's Aravali Forest has been converted to urban/industrial land since 1990.
