Narsingha is one of the earliest trumpets used in some parts of India and Nepal. It consists of two metal pieces that are curved. These two pieces are joined together to form an ‘S’ shape. It is an aero folk musical instrument in which sound is generated by air as the primary vibrating medium . It is most popularly used in Garhwal folk dramas. The Ransingha is called by many other names such as Turri, Turhi, Bugudu, etc., in different regions of India. It is also believed that the Nansingha has its origins in the battlefield. It is said that it was played when deities won the battle of good against evil and it was played to celebrate victory. It is, therefore, a sign of victory. It is also played in folk rituals, dramas and songs.
The instrument is made of brass and copper. The word ‘Narsingha’ literally means ‘Buffalo horn’. Earlier, long and conically shaped buffalo horns were used to make this instrument. It was later that it started being made from metal. It is referred to as ‘Turya’ in Sanskrit. The instrument also plays an important role in Dogri folk music. The Narsingha has a really loud roar which celebrates the colourful culture of the Dogras.
