A Dafli or Daf is a handheld bass producing instrument, which can be thought of similar to a drum or Tabla. It is held in one hand and played by shaking or hitting it with the other hand. It consists of a frame, often of wood or plastic, with pairs of small metal jingles, called "zils".
It is believed to have arrived along with other Persian influences in the medieval era, and is a popular folk instrument. In southern India, its use became mainstream, especially in protests, during the early half of the 20th century. It is often used in rural folk fares, religious festivals, or Bhajans.
