Two years after moving to this property we saw our first Bobcat on our Trail Camera. 3-16-19!
But having only one camera on the property and it not always working properly or batteries drained, we were not sure just how often we were getting visited or if it was more than one bobcat.
With generous donations received at the start of developing of the Desert Nature Alliance, we were able to buy a second camera and have since used it in a stationary spot next to a large water bowl with a second camera in rotating positions. Now we have documented visits, times and temperatures and have started attempting to identify our local cat or cats. Easier said than done! Bobcats can have very large territories that can overlap. Excessive heat, drought and nearby fires contribute to the bobcats behaviors, movements and health. We know this type of study is not done over night. This is why we plan on studying the local Bobcats, period. There is no end date. As long as they are here so are we! Watching learning, sharing what we know, taking notes, studying and reaching out to our friends and neighbors asking what they have seen and want to share. We reached out online through social media letting everyone know we had started officially attempting to study the local bobcats and would they be interested in helping? Our friends and neighbors definitely wanted to help make sure the local cats were looked after and protected! Currently we are receiving photos and videos from locals who are seeing and enjoying bobcats in their backyards!
Now we are mapping these locations in another attempt to accurately monitor the overall health and population as best we can. All photos and videos and locations are for the study only and are not made public without permission by the owner.
If you are studying Bobcats and would like more information or are a local who sees one or two bobcats regularly please email us or reach out on social media. The more we know the better we can do. Donations for cameras and batteries are greatly appreciated
Below are samples of the images of Bobcats we have captured here on our property or close by.
