Ink, 11" x 14" Image Area, 15" x 20" Illustration Board
The purpose of this project was to create a self-portrait that was based on our hobbies, interests, or personality. This piece was inspired by the "How to Train Your Dragon" movie series that I loved as a child. I was particularly inspired by the movie still where the main character, Hiccup, leans his forehead and embraces his dragon, Toothless. In this concept, I imagined myself in the place of Hiccup and recreated the scene through ink and paper.
The first step of this project was to create several thumbnails based on our hobbies, interests, or personality. This ultimately helped to establish a concept for the final piece.
The second step of this project was to pick one thumbnail and create a mini 8" x 10" concept sketch. This would help to identify and showcase various grayscale values that would be used in the final project.
The third step of this project was to create a contour sketch to establish the 11" x 14" image area that would be used for the final piece.
The fourth step of this project used the contour sketch as a reference to practice creating various textures and ranges in value before placing them on the final piece itself.
