Perplexium is an arcade game that intends to faithfully recreate the tight, fluid gameplay of the original Super Monkey Ball games on GameCube.
I loved Monkey Ball as a child, and I was inspired to pursue my own take on the formula after noticing flaws or inconsistencies in other remakes.
Perplexium was submitted to a major game jam at University of Staffordshire, and received Overall Winner. The jam had no particular theme, but it was required that participants made an arcade game.
I made Perplexium on my own, including all aspects of design and implementation. The game began as a spontaneous side-project I put together over the summer of 2025.
Perplexium differs from other Monkey Ball remakes in how the motion of the ball is implemented. I use a vertex shader to create the illusion of the stage tilting; the joystick simply applies a horizontal force to the ball.
