Aberrations created by the long since defunct Rosemont Corporation, during the Corporate Wars of the 1600's. The Rattlers were made as shock troopers for their war effort, they were engineered as hulking, muscle bound creatures, with the notable trait of having massive fangs. Once Rosemont was defeated, the Ministry and their allies attempted to exterminate the Rattlers from the Gulch; they would unfortunately be unsuccessful. Till this day the Rattlers have been a consistent threat for all within the Gulch.
The Rattler Nests
The Rattlers, mankind's sworn enemies, were created centuries ago by the foolish and now thankfully defunct Rosemont Corporation as their trump card during the Decades of Shame in the Floating City of Atlantropa. These creatures are hyper-aggressive war machines that Rosemont believed would tip the scales in their favor, though this proved to be an unsuccessful endeavor, as they were destroyed in the final hours of the Decades of Shame. Yet the Rattlers survived, fleeing deep within the Gulch and becoming a recurring problem for the dwellers beneath the Floating City.
The Vril'Ka Maneaters:
A small Rattler Nest within the hollowed underworks of Funky Town, they have been able to survive in the middle of the inter-syndicate war zone thanks to the abundance of human bodies that they are able to collect at night time. Recent events however have made them more aggressive and active, almost as if they can feel a dark presence looming over them.
The Vril'Ka Maneaters, a splinter of the once more numerous Vril'Drahamen Nest. The same nest that was dominated by the outsider Bahamut, during the Penumbra Wars. The Vril'ka have attempted to stay under the noses of the humans, as their nest is still too small and shallow to withstand a full assault from their enemies. Their Queen Mother is still in a "lesser" state, her development slowed by the lack of proper resources, yet with time she will be able to become a full Queen Mother.
Processing
The Rattler gene is not able to be produced naturally, as it was tailored and designed in such a way that the Rattler population could be easily wiped out in a single generation with the death of their respective Queen Mother. The Rosemont Corporation made it so that they could dispose of them easily after the war with the Atlantropean Government and Ministry. With the fall of the Rosemont Corporation, new Gene Stock became obtainable by the Queen Mother's, in order to keep producing Rattlers they would begin to recycle the Gene Stocks from dead or old Rattlers. Although this method was successful initially, the Gene Stock Quality has deteriorated heavily through the centuries, leading to various mutations in the Rattler species. Any detrimental mutation is quickly purged, with only a partial amount of the Gene Stock being able be processed in such cases
The Pride of the Viper Nest 1907
Once considered to be the next Rattler Nest to fall and be exterminated by the efforts of the Companions, a Rattler Nest has not fallen since the actions of Bahamut during the Penumbra Wars. In which Bahamut would manage to slay a Queen Mother and take control of the Rattlers of Nest Gabonica. Nest Dendroaspis would appear to be buckling under the attacks of the Companions, until General Spear would take charge, stalling their progress and even repealing them at several key junctions.
The war with the Companions halted as the rise of a ghost from their past took priority, leaving the Rattlers of the Dendroaspis Nest free to mend their defenses and regroup. Yet General Spear did not let his guard down, something was coming from the Eastern Ends of the Gulch. He did not hear the familiar rumble of the engines of the Syndicates or Corporations, nor the marching of the boots of the Companions, it was something new. His scouts would return with stories of armored clad humans, who marched under a black banner, these "Mortali" had pushed beyond the Straits Crossings and were marching towards the Great Dendroaspis Nest.
Considered by the Ministry of Internal Affairs to be the greatest commander that the Rattlers have ever produced, he has bested Syndicates, Corporations, and the Companions. Expanding for the first time in a long time the territory of the Dendroaspis Nest. More impressively has been his ability to coordinate with other Rattler Nests, Nests which have been notoriously antagonistic to one another for centuries, and although it is merely hearsay some within the Government and MIA believe he has even managed to broker deals with the Black Meiji Criminal Syndicate.
Spear's life would not begin in grandeur, despite his current imposing stature and muscle mass, he was the runt of the litter when he was born. His distinctive sharp head shape was marked as a mutation, that plus his small weak form had him marked for Processing. If it wasn't for the timely attack by the Companions of St. Leo, a routine purging operation meant to keep the nest weak, he would have been processed. Instead the small rattler was given a makeshift gun and sent out to fight and die for the glory of the Queen Mother and the Nest. Despite his size he would manage to slay several Companion Warriors in the fight. By the end of the raid the Companions would retreat, having substantiated more losses than expected. Spear would be allowed to continue living, he still holds on to the helmet and skulls of the Companions he killed that day.
The basic Rattler warrior, skullcaps are named for their metal plate that they bolt into their heads. They are violent and stubborn creatures that are prone to picking fights even when out numbered and out gunned. Many Rattlers only ever make it to this stage in their development, as their lives are much like their temperaments, short and brutal.
Heavily armored Rattlers, the Vanguards are veterans of many battles. They are honored by leading their brothers into combat, serving as the elite tip of the spear of their Nest. These Rattlers often prefer to use melee weapons, they all have special commando knives that were created by the Rosemont Corporation centuries ago, these knives are highly valued in Rattler society as a sign of great honor and prestige.
Specialized Rattlers, the Hardshells are the engineers of the Nests, they are in charge of maintaining the structures, machinery, and weaponry that the Rattlers need. Hardshells instinctively know how to make rudimentary firearms out of nearly anything they can get their hands on, as such they are extremely valuable to a nest as they serve as quarter masters for them.
A mutation that was deemed acceptable and useful to an extent by the Queen Mothers. Longlegs gained their name due to the extreme lengthening of their limbs as they age, with this also comes a more animalistic nature. The Longlegs are used as terror units by the Rattlers during raids on human settlements, with their freakish proportions and speed they are able to terrorize the humans easily.
Distinguished by their heavily augmented heads, the Jarheads are bigger and stronger than a Skull Cap. They are often seen on the battlefield with heavier weaponry and or explosives. They are also notable for being bullies, often picking on their lesser Skull Cap brothers.
Elite guards, the Royal Guard are Rattlers of a higher Gene Stock, they are the body guards of the Queen Mother and her Internal throne within the core of the Rattler Nest. They are heavily armored and prefer to use melee weapons to fight off threats, they are dispatched to the battlefield to serve as guards for Generals or to fulfill a specific mission from the Queen Mother.
These Rattlers are responsible for raising and training Ripper Jaws, they are dispatched into the urban sprawl of the Gulch to search for any creatures or humans that might serve as food for the Nest. The taming of the Ripper Jaws is an oddity and perhaps a mutation in the Gene Stock, as Rattlers seemed to for the longest time go out of their way to kill anything that wasn't like them. Perhaps much like humans and dogs, the Rattlers have grown to see a bit of themselves in the toothy and thick leather hides of the Ripper Jaws.
Terrifying creatures that live in the Gulch of the Floating City. They have been deemed an aberration much like the Rattlers. They are very dangerous. It is well-known that even if one survives an encounter with a Ripper Jaw, they must seek immediate medical attention, as their bites are highly infectious.
The earliest stage in a rattler's developmental cycle, Juveniles are born from the walls of the interior chamber of the Queen Mother's throne. Juveniles are able to walk shortly after, it only takes them a day to understand how to use a weapon from there on. They are however very vulnerable in this stage lacking the hardened hide and the bulky muscle mass that makes rattlers so imposing. It seems to take a Juvenile only a few months to reach maturity and turn into a skullcap.
