In Fall 2022, I took LIS 5250, “Developing and Managing Collections.” As part of my studies, I was encouraged to create a collection development policy that included the library philosophy, selection criteria and tools, deselection, discussion of bias, diversity, a procedure for reconsideration, and evaluating the collection.
Another highlight of this class was creating a book display to promote books in a library collection. As someone who is both neurodivergent and queer, putting an emphasis on diverse collections was a personal value for me, as well as a professional objective.
