Hard Riders

The Hardriders Section has existed since the 1960’s. Originally it catered for CTC members who were also interested in racing, and current members have  been road racers, time trialists and grass track racers. Long distance rides were also undertaken, before Audax UK was formed. The longest run of the year was a 260 mile in 24 hours reliability trial.

Those days are now long gone, but the Section has retained the name of Hardriders in memory of those past exploits.

These days, Sunday runs are arranged on an ad hoc basis, with those present agreeing where to meet up the following week. Riders make their own way to the lunch place in ones and twos as suits them.

A packed lunch is taken and eaten at a local pub which does not serve food. Frequently, this is the White Swan at Stokesley, and occasionally the Havelock Arms at Middleton St. George.

Other venues may also be chosen from time to time, especially in the summer, so if you’d like to meet up with this Section, it’s best to check beforehand with Runs Secretary, Dave Bell, Tel. 01642 467005

More Hardriders history (with thanks to Robert Murphy)

This article appeared in the East Cleveland free paper 'Coastal View and Moor News', Issue 137, March 2023 and was kindly brought to our attention by Robert Murphy.

It features an amazing nonagenarian by the name of Jack Noble, who lives at Liverton Mines, and contains some memorable tales of his cycling exploits, including his time with the  Hardriders. Well worth a look; they don't make them like that anymore!
