Sunday 7th June 2026  Lake Gormire Gathering; onwards at Thirlby Village Hall, Thirlby, Thirsk YO7 2DJ.

Andy Edwards reports: A great day out today at Thirlby village hall. A lovely spread was laid on by the Village Hall committee, which was enjoyed by all with plenty taken away afterwards.

Chapeau to the large club riding group led by David Woodhouse setting off from Yarm doing well over 50 miles return, with some strong climbs over the North York Moors. At Brompton, David Bell from the hard riders section joined them.

Many thanks to everyone who came. Mary, the Village Hall coordinator, said her first Teesside gathering was in 1999 and it had been going for many years before that. So a well established tradition carries on.

We welcome riders from any cycling club or group to join on this fantastic day.

Riders have come from Teesside, Whitby, Malton and Ripon in previous years.

The Gormire gathering is a special day, dedicated to cyclists and set in a picturesque village under the imposing ridge of Sutton Bank.

The hall is on the right side of Thirlby as you cycle towards the North York Moors, 4 miles east of Thirsk between Felixkirk and Sutton-under-Whitestonecliffe; it is here that the lunch will be served.

Lake Gormire is approximately a mile from the village and is well worth a visit if you haven’t been before. It is said to be bottomless and is thought to be over 20,000 years old, formed by glacial erosion and is steeped in history and has many myths and legends.
