Interview with Ms. Karin, Binus School Simprug Counsellor
This interview took place on Thursday, April 6, 2023.
Q: Can you share your experience with cyberbullying?
A: "There was a cyberbullying situation I ever handled. I ever experienced people getting cyberbullied, not only students but friends too. I tell by seeing the people who did it, they are having fun, like happy, the victim tries to defend but their word is useless and there is a huge impact on the victim. They can get stressed thinking about it and get lack of sleep and many more."
Q: How do you help students who are dealing with cyberbullying?
A: "We first investigate how bad is it. I want to hear them and listen to them about how they see these things. I accommodate them and communicate with the teacher and when they are ready, they can go back to class but the counseling keeps going until the student is comfortable."
Q: What are the main causes of cyberbullying?
A: "It can be because they hate the person, I think when. you're doing it online, you get more people to support you and you are anonymous. They want a voice, but stay anonymous."
Q: What is the impact of cyberbullying on kids?
A: For the Victim: "It affects them socially, physically, and emotionally. You will feel bad and embarrassed. It also affects all aspects of the victim."
For the Bully: "They can get a sanction or something like that in school if they get in trouble. The bully would also not grow more mature, they’d be alone and have no friends."
Q: Why do people prefer bullying online rather than offline?
A: "They can hide their identity and people can see their messages, so there is more support for the bully."
Q: At what age is social media appropriate and why?
A: "Age 13, 14, 15 but have their parents have access to the accounts. By 17, they can control themselves and they are also more mature. Young age can use social media as long as it's useful."
Q: What can we do to prevent cyberbullying?
A: "It can start at home, a family can have an important rule for the children’s character. I think school and family can help. There should be a strict policy and teaching empathy and character."
Q: Is there a good side to cyberbullying?
A: "No, for me, bullying is not acceptable."
