Shield Against Cyberbullying
Kayla Pranatalia Kasim
Did you know that 37% of young people get cyberbullied each day? And only 1 out of 10 of the people report the online abuse they get. Cyberbullies have a higher chance of being strangers and they can remain anonymous. Every day, many people from around the world go online to see negative comments from others. Although cyberbullying is bad, mean, and harmful, there are many ways to handle it. If the bully is a stranger, then you can just easily ignore, block, and report them. If the cyberbully is someone you know or you meet a lot, solving it will require multiple steps.
Cyberbullying is dangerous because of the many impacts it can deal on a person’s life. For example, a person can feel insecure and will be too shy to give their opinions or show their selves to others. This can make the victim want to be isolated and will be less confident throughout their lives. If the victim is not mature yet, then they can take the negative comments too personally and will be more offended. Younger ones who have not learned to control their emotions properly can think too much and will get distracted from more important things.
Phycologist learned and discovered many ways to handle cyberbullying. The most important thing is to not take it too seriously. If the bully sees that you do not get offended, then they will not bother you again. This also means that you must control your emotions and feelings. Thinking too much about what the bullies say can cause stress and can be a distraction from more important things. Remember that you need to be mature before using any type of social media without constant adult supervision.
If someone cyberbullies you through chat, you must remember to take photos for evidence. When you get evidence, you can report the bully and they will not do it again. If this person still bullies you even if you ignore them, then it is best to block and report the user. If you have many friends that constantly get bullied by the same person, then you and your friends can all report the bully to tell the social media platform that the user is a constant harasser.
If the bully is someone you know then you need to inform them that what they are doing is wrong. If the bully is in your community, then report it to your guardian or a trusted adult. Some bullies can also be your friends. They may think that it is just a joke and may not know that it could really hurt someone’s feelings. Your friends need to know that cyberbullying is not just a joke and can seriously hurt someone.
Be confident and never be afraid to tell someone about their mistakes. If you see a friend getting bullied, and you know that the person is not confident enough to stand up for themselves, then you should stand up for them and report the abuse to a trusted adult. Teach others to be confident enough to stand up for themselves and other people. Teach by example, so others will follow you and your right example. The more you inform others the more upstanders we will have.
You should be confident to be braver, and safer, and help others stand up for themselves. Maintaining your feelings and reporting is the best way to handle cyberbullying. Limit your time on social media and ensure that you are mature enough to handle negative comments. Remember to always be confident and safe online.
Cyber trouble
Georgia Gabrielle Hadipoespito
Ever wonder why the world is full of trouble? Some may start in an evil way which is cyberbullying. Cyberbullying is bullying online by insulting and making people hurt mentally and emotionally. When people cyberbully, it could end up in worse-case scenarios. Cyberbullying can happen in many ways. One of them starts from hate and fights.
Cyberbullying should stop immediately. It can cause many issues. Insulters are one of many cyberbullies. It could end up having heart problems, being ill, and having mental issues. From a bully’s perspective, it might seem not that hurtful but may be harmful and mean to the victim.
Cyberbullying usually starts with arguments, jealousy, and even if they just want to be mean, who knows? Even though most cyberbullies are anonymous, most people will find out the person behind them because of modern technology. Victims can ask people for help so that they can rely on someone to help them fight this issue and can easily report to social media or apps about what has happened.
Sometimes cyberbullying can have some harsh consequences on society. It can lead to higher rates of crime, drug abuse, and other harmful behaviors. It can also impact the mental health of individuals and lead to a lack of trust in others. By promoting kindness and respect, we can create a positive and healthy society that involves diversity and inclusivity.
Cyberbullying is never accepted. It is a harmful and unacceptable behavior, no matter the circumstances or the scene. It is not a solution to any problem and only serves to create more harm. By choosing not to bully, we can show compassion and empathy towards others and create a positive and supportive environment. Without cyberbullying our world would have less trouble and more peace. Some people might think that it is a way of showing their feelings, but it should not be a way to show your feelings while hurting other people’s hearts.
In conclusion, bullying is a harmful behavior that has severe consequences for individuals and society. By choosing not to bully, we can create a safe and healthy environment that values kindness, respect, and empathy. We must promote positive social skills and emotional intelligence that will benefit people throughout their lives. It is our responsibility to create a world that is free of bullying and promotes a positive and inclusive environment for all.
Cyber Change
Seira Elena Sulistyo
Imagine a world filled with bullies, online and offline. That wouldn’t be good for anyone, not even the bullies. There is less and less bullying nowadays but lots of bullying is still happening online. It’s harder to solve than offline bullying since the bully is usually anonymous. A lot of people don’t even care about this, but we need to take action to help the victims.
Cyberbullying can happen on almost every social media platform, like games, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, etc. When people get cyberbullied, it can lead to things like suicidal thoughts, depression, self-harm, insecurities, and many more. People could also spread lies and rumors about someone they could type and post that this person is stupid or terrible about something, but it could be not true. People spread lies and rumors possibly for fun or they hate the person, and other reasons. We can’t stop people who are like this, but we can try to make the bully realize what they did. If we can’t, at least we can try to help the victim to feel better.
In our digital world, we need more upstanders rather than bystanders. An upstander is someone who sees someone getting cyberbullied but stands up for the person, a bystander only sees someone getting cyberbullied but does not do anything. Being an upstander would make the victim feel better since there is someone helping them. You should be an upstander and help people when you see them getting cyberbullied, and to try decrease the cases of cyberbullying. Helping people is also part of taking action.
Bullies hide under the cover of anonymity when they are cyberbullying someone. It’s hard to find out who the bully is, but the bully should also know. If their identity were to be found, they’d have major consequences, but most of the time, the bully’s identity stays unknown. The victim and bully could fight but the victim would lose, or the victim does nothing and get hurt. That is what could happen when a person cyberbullied someone. How about if we take action? We could separate them if they ever go into a fight, we could help the victim if they feel hurt, we could also stand up for the victim and other things.
If we don’t take action, cyberbullying could never stop and cause suicide. Eventually, everyone would get cyberbullied and there won’t be any safe place in the world. Addresses, names, and phone numbers could be revealed, the bully might start doing physical bullying and cyberbullying. It would be scary if that were to happen to anyone. So why don’t we put ourselves in the victim’s shoes, we would want somebody to help us if we were cyberbullied.
In conclusion, taking action to solve cyberbullying is important. Standing up for others is like being nice to someone. You also treat the victim the same way you would want to be treated if you were to get cyberbullied. Cyberbullying someone is also bad for the bully, they could be all alone since nobody likes bullies. So as the saying goes, treat people like how you want to be treated, it's simple and easy, offline and online.
Cyber Chaos
Tiffany Carmela Soerjady
Do you ever want to post on your social media accounts but are too afraid to be judged? Social media comes in very different platforms that are commonly used such as Youtube, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, Discord, Facebook, and Google. There are also more platforms you have probably never heard of such as Ello, Asmallworld, Ninng, Turmblr, Yubo, Triller, Reddit, and Clubhouse. In 2023 over 4.9 billion people have access to social media. According to the research done earlier this year, it says that most people at the age of 20 - 29 have access to social media. The generation who grows up with the internet like us find it hard to live without it. As youngsters explore the internet, they will soon get addicted to it and will find it challenging to stop or detach from social media platforms. Some of the facts about cyberbullying are:
Firstly, cyberbullying is one of the concerning impacts when people get exposed too heavily to the internet / social media. Internet and social media have been a crucial part of people's life. Some of modern people even use the internet or media platform for living and earning income. Their job/career is supported by the existence of the Internet. Cyberbullying occurs in some social media posts such as Instagram, Tik Tok, and Youtube causing the victim to suffer a mental breakdown and physical illness, increased stress, anxiety, and even worst suicidal thoughts. People believe that there is recommended age for youngsters to use social media which is above 13 years old. Youngsters need to be mature enough mentally and physically to handle cyberbullying by themselves. However, the majority of children have lied about their age in order to have access allowing them to get exposed to videos or content that are inappropriate. They are likely to be targeted by the internet haters.
Secondly, someone can get cyberbullied by random people on the internet and it is done anonymously. There are a few different factors that could trigger this, such as jealousy, anger, envy, and maybe revenge. Some anonymous bullies are targeted to the victims for their skin color, appearance, or body size which we call body shaming. Anonymous bullies are sometimes done by someone who comes from the victim's social circle. The bully may come from a family / relative circle who experiences personal pain or childhood trauma that creates mental distress and intimidating behavior.
Lastly, now that we all know how cyberbullying can be life-threatening, it is important that people learn how to prevent it. How much time that we spend on the internet increase the chance of being cyberbullied. Some of the recommended ways to prevent as follows:
Protect your personal information. While most of situations cyberbullying doesn't escalate to a very dangerous point, it is still better to make sure to keep your personal information private. Keeping your personal life from getting exposed to the public will prevent the bully from harassing and threatening your life.
Don't respond or retaliate. This option is one of the safest ways to prevent cyberbullying. When targeted do not respond because a small interaction can lead to a deeper state of situation or friction. That's why researchers encourage people to block rather than fight back.
Contact professionals if ever feel threatened. When the situation gets out of control and you feel you are in danger, it's best to contact professionals. Some issues can be dealt with easily, however, threats and harassment should not be ignored.
Even though some people may think that cyberbullying somehow is a good mental training for the victims that make them more resilient in facing or tackling future challenging issues, however in my personal opinion cyberbullying has more destructive impacts on an individual mentally and should never be considered as an acceptable behavior in societies.
In conclusion, now cyberbullying is one of the most concerning issues faced by modern societies who live with the internet and social media. Resolving this, it requires a collective effort from the parents, the educational institutions, the government, and the individuals themselves to prevent it. It should start within the family circle (the parents) by nurturing ethics, respect, and good moral value to the children. Next, the educational institution should help create a healthy and bully-free environment for all the students including placing strict punishments on students who bully. While society can help by raising their voice against cyberbullying to the government so that the government can get alerted and start developing the laws.

Cyberbullying can happen on almost all types of social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, Tiktok, Twitter, online games, etc. People get cyberbullied the most on YouTube for their videos.
