Camp Winona is a Girl Scout sleep-away camp for Girl Scouts in grades K-11 (ages 5-17) where campers connect with nature and develop creativity, confidence, and social and emotional skills in a fun, safe, rustic, and traditional camp setting away from the digital landscape.
Located in Charles County, Maryland, Potomac Woods is 40 miles southeast or 1 hour outside of Washington, DC, and is within driving distance of several major cities, including Richmond, Baltimore, and Philadelphia.
Winona is a member of the American Camp Association and has achieved accreditation status by completing a voluntary peer review process of standards applicable to our program. Accreditation means that camp undergoes a thorough review process by outside camping professionals every three years. Camp Winona is owned and operated by Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital, the largest Girl Scout council in the United States of America.
Campers attend a variety of specialty theme overnight programs that range from a one night overnight, to two nights, to five nights. This summer, we expect to serve around 100 campers per week and hire a staff of about 50.
The property spans 178 acres of mostly flat grassland with some trees - click here to see more pictures of the camp property itself - so there's lots of open space for large group games. Winona has many nature trails and in turn, a full range of North American woodland wildlife including deer, mice, raccoons, turtles, foxes, opossums, beavers, snakes, spiders, and more.
Campers enjoy kayaking and canoeing at Trefoil Pond, swimming at the pool, getting creative at arts & crafts, trying outdoor cooking, learning about STEM, and taking aim at target sports like archery, slingshots, knife and tomahawk (axe) throwing! Campers participate in many wonderful Camp Winona traditions, including campfires, singing, and hikes to explore the geological history of camp at Fossil Creek and Trefoil Pond. Full of creativity and imagination, all programs provide girls the opportunity to explore the outdoors while having the time of their lives!
