For this assignment, I looked at data about social media and its impact on society. I then took a quiz to analyze how addicted I am to social media. (Link found in citations)
I was not surprised by the results. I regulate my use of social media and I make sure it doesn't interfere with what is important. Here are my results.
A statistic that really stood out to me from the Pew Research Articles (link in citations) was how Facebook is still one of the most dominant social medias out there. I chose this one because I myself do not use it at all and people my age don't either. Despite that, there are many people of other ages that use this platform, hence why it is still standing and popular. It's interesting to think that the younger generation doesn't use an app but older generations still have great impact in the usage and consuming.
In my personal opinion, I believe social media is positively affecting society in today's age. Today, many can stay connected with family members through apps like WhatsApp. For many people who move to different states or countries, social media is the only way to keep communication and relationships alive. Also, social media is oftentimes a faster and easier ways to spread news or warnings. When there is a potential danger in an area, people can alert others who could be affected by it. This could range from natural disasters to dangerous threats targeting minorities. For example, with immigration in our country today, people share live updates about immigration enforcement actions, like checkpoints or raids, through platforms such as WhatsApp or Facebook. This allows others nearby to avoid the area and stay alert and safe. This is why social media is critical these days.
Completing this project, I learned that we have many misunderstandings of how social media is used, who it is used by and for what purpose. It has become increasingly evident that it is not going away any time soon. By knowing how to use it properly and using it with the correct intent, it is a powerful tool.
