This page reflects the understanding gained of the impact of social media on users and society through article reviews and survey participation.
My results from the "Am I Addicted to Social Media" quiz stated that I have a healthy relationship with social media. It's mentioned that 5-10% of Americans have an addiction to social media. I can understand why, since social media offers connections with people and places that may not be obtainable for some in a personal manner. I find myself wanting the opposite a little more, which is why I received the results I did. I enjoy getting a personal view from my surrounding environment, as well as working towards the potential of traveling to experience new cultures and communities. This survey eased the thought of my use of social media being excessive.
After reviewing the Pew Research article, I gravitated towards the matrix chart that is pictured to the left. This chart interested me more than the others since, in my opinion, it includes more useful data to use when analyzing the use of social media in various groups. This chart allows me to get a detailed view of gender, race, age, income, education, and demographics while giving the percentage of use on 11 platforms. With this approach, I found it easy to develop a pattern between the odds of overuse of platforms and beneficial use of platforms, depending on the demographics of a person. This article allowed for a deeper understanding of social media usage.
Social Media's Impact on Society
I feel that social media has the potential to positively affect today's society. Social media has many benefits, for example, building connections and having informative media available in minutes. But social media is also negatively impacting society, with its unrealistic societal standards influencing the people of society, and the potential risks of cyberbullying from an incognito option available. Encouraging proper civil use of social media can reveal the benefits hidden by the negativity that's taken over most platforms. Overall, I think the impact of social media on society depends on its users.
Lessons Learned
After reviewing the materials in this lesson, I gained some useful information about social media as it relates to society and myself. I can confidently say my relationship with social media is healthy, and I'm able to identify the relationship between the use of social media and the demographics of the user.
