A research concert is a fascinating show-and-tell where the invited performer shares the backstory of the music they present, and takes the opportunity to share the process of diving down the many research rabbitholes that go into preparing their material for performance. You can expect more talking than the brief introductions in a typical houseconcert, while still enjoying the resulting song and story in a deeper and broader context. Come behind the scenes with our researchers in concert!

Helen Creighton collected over 60,000 songs, stories, bits of witchcraft and other folklore from the peoples of Canada over the course of her career. Come hear some of Cate's favorite Creighton songs in concert – perhaps with a story or recitation tossed in - and then peek behind the curtain at Dr. Creighton’s life, and learn who she was beyond the work she left behind!

Cate Clifford is a typically unaccompanied singer based in Rhode Island. With powerful vocals, sensitive harmonies, and engaging context gleaned from intensive study, Cate creates a vivid and accessible pathway to the songs she offers, the people and stories behind them, and the profound, timeless delight of sharing both. A proud member of AFM Local 1000, the Traveling Musicians Union, she has raised rafters and cracked hearts in homes, venues, festivals and recording studios on both coasts of the USA. She maintains that no set is immune to a dash of Sondheim or a sprinkle of Shakespeare.

For the 2026-2027 research concert series, vaccination and masking are optional. We strongly believe that the COVID vaccines are highly effective at preventing disease and for making the disease milder, and we recommend that everyone who can get a vaccine before the event do so. The evidence indicates that masking works very well in mitigating the transmission of airborne disease. It has proven to be one of the best tools for preventing the spread of COVID.
Please respect everyone’s personal choice to mask or not mask.
We reserve the right to revise this policy depending upon any significant changes in the public health situation as we approach each event in the series.
Symptoms or Testing Positive: If you feel unwell at all, have a positive COVID test result, or have had COVID very recently (with a positive test or symptoms beginning less than 10 days ago), please do not attend. We will refund tickets purchased in advance, if you are unable to attend due to illness.
