5E

 INSTRUCTIONAL MODEL

The 5E Instructional Model was developed by the Biological Sciences Curriculum Study which includes Rodger Bybee.  The 5E is a learning cycle based on the constructivist view of learning.

The teacher's role in a constructivist model such as the 5E model is to provide students with experiences that help them evaluate the conceptions they bring with them to the learning experience.  The student's role is to "redefine, reorganize, elaborate, and possibly change their initial concepts through self-reflection and interactions with their peers and their environment.

The premise of constructivism is that students should make sense of information and experience in order for understanding and long-term learning to take place.
