Professor Derek Bailey is a leading researcher in range science and precision livestock management, with a 40 year career dedicated to improving the sustainability and efficiency of grazing systems. He has held academic appointments at New Mexico State University, where he served as Professor of Range Science, and continues his work as Director of Research and Outreach at Deep Well Ranch in Arizona.
His research in uses precision livestock technologies to detect early signs of disease and welfare issues in extensive systems, enabling earlier intervention, improved animla outcomes, and reduced labour demands. Derek's work has a strong emphasis on translating research into tools that can be applied at scale in commercial operations. He continues to collaborate with research teams across the United States and internationally to advance precision livestock management and rangeland sustainability.
Derek holds a PhD in Range Science and both a Master's degree and Bachelor's degree in Animal Science from Colorado State University.
