Beverley Sorenson Art Grant

Dear Cottonwood Elementary Families,

The Cottonwood Art Foundation is a Booster Club separate from the PTA and is run through the Granite Education Foundation. It exists to support the Visual Arts program at Cottonwood. We have been fortunate over the past couple of years to have our amazing Visual Arts Specialist, Sheryl Thorell, funded through the Beverly Taylor Sorenson (BTS) Grant. After the 2019-20 school year, the BTS Grant at our school was going to rotate from Visual Arts to a different art form such as music, theater or dance. Though we will welcome this new art form at our school, we will continue the tradition of a strong Visual Arts program at Cottonwood. We believe that it provides valuable enrichment to each student's education. Raising money to fund a Visual Arts specialist as a District employee will require the support of our entire Cottonwood community.

We are seeking corporate, family foundation, and personal donations to our program. All donations are tax-deductible. Please let us know if you are aware of a company we can contact about supporting our program with a donation or "matching" funds earned at the Art Stroll. We are selling banners to businesses to support our program as well. Please contact us if you can assist in these ways.

We welcome new ideas and members to our Art Committee. Contact us if you would like to be involved in keeping a Visual Arts Program at Cottonwood!

Cottonwood Elementary School has been selected to receive the Beverley Sorenson Art Grant since the 2012-2013 school year. The 2022-2024 school year is our 12th year. Every student, kindergarten through fifth grade, is able to participate in an integrated art experience every other week for one hour. This is a side-by-side teaching model where the core teacher and the art teacher work together for the implementation of art.

Beverley Taylor Sorenson, a former elementary school teacher, created the innovative Art Works For Kids program. This Art Works For Kids program successfully demonstrates the correlation between arts training and cognitive and personal development in children, with significant social and behavioral benefits. The Beverley Taylor Sorenson Arts Learning Program (BTSALP) provides arts-integrated instruction to students, effectively increasing student performance in every subject from language arts and social studies to math and science.

Everyone is encouraged to sign-up to become friends of Art Works For Kids. Click the Art Works For Kids link below and then follow the directions. Every bit of support helps to keep the program going!
