Inclusive Excellence and Universal Design for Learning

Inclusive Excellence (IE)

Inclusive Excellence is the act of being able to create an inclusive classroom environment by implementing student knowledge, diversity and perspective. My goal in my teaching is to always make sure that all students feel included and that they have value with the content that is being presented.

I have implemented the following into my classroom to ensure I am practicing Inclusive Excellence:

Learning Names: Students feel that they have more of a relationship with me as their instructor and not just 'another student' that is passing through. I have the students create name tags that go away after about two weeks when I have memorized their names. I also send out a Google Form to get the correct phonetic pronunciation.

Using Multiple and Diverse Examples: The content is broad, so I make sure that I am using multiple examples that provide opportunity for all students with different learning preferences, to understand the material. This is done through the use of reading material, active learning, videos and listening material.

Establishing Ground Rules: This is a time for students to set the ground rules for the environment of the classroom. This creates autonomy for the students to take control of their learning environment and create a safe zone.

Examination of Curriculum: Throughout the semester, I reflect on activities that were completed and evaluate if they truly demonstrated the inclusive excellence I strive to have in the classroom. If they do not exhibit inclusivity, I make adjustments to meet that need.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL)

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a set of principles that create a framework for curriculum development. These principles allow individuals equal opportunities to learn in the classroom. These principles have a three area framework including engagement, representation, and action & expression. I have strived to move away from a lecturing instructor to involve more active learning approaches. I have evaluated how the material and activities in class provided value to students. Through the use of a variety of learning activities, students will have a greater change of being able to apply the material to their real life activities.
