You will need to bring your understanding of atoms from the previous lesson.
To learn the difference between atoms, elements, ions and compounds
To understand the changes inside an atom that can create an atom/element/ion
I can define an atom, element, ion and compound
I can describe the changes to subatomic particles in one atom that creates an element/ion
What do you think the difference between these three images is?
(See Below)
Write your idea down, then we will watch a video to confirm your preconceptions.
After watching the video what is the difference?
We use the term particles to refer to anything that makes up matter so long as it makes up one unit.
Each of these are particles
1 Water molecule (H2O)
1 Hydrogen Atom (H)
1 Oxygen molecule (O2)
1 Electron (e-)
We will be investigating 4 different types of particle today:
Atoms
Elements
ions
isotopes
We know atoms are the fundemental unit of matter.
They are made from:
Protons
Neutrons
Electrons
Last lesson we learnt that the number of protons determines the element.
An element is an atom with a particular amount of protons
If we change the number of protons we change the element.
Ions are charged atoms.
If you add or remove electrons or protons to an atom you can make them ions.
If ions have more protons than electrons they are positively charged.
These are called cations
If ions have more electrons than protons they are negatively charged.
These are called anions
Isotopes are atoms of the same element with different masses.
This is because the amount of protons is the same but the number of neutrons is different
If you add or remove protons you change the mass of the element and make it an isotope.
Use your knowledge and a periodic table to complete these worksheets
