To define ecology
To define an ecosystem
To investigate the different levels of ecosystems
I can define ecology
I can define an ecosystem
I can state the different levels of ecosystems
Who is this?
Tell me about him, what does he do?
Ecology is the study of realtionships amoung living organisms and their surroundings.
An ecologist will usually study one animal or habitat and investigate all the interactions that occurs with those entities.
An ecosystem is a system that includes all biotic and abiotic factors functioning as a unit.
Biotic - living things
Abiotic - non-living things
Example:
Biotic - Fish, ducks, frog, snail, dragonfly, aquatic and terrestiral plants, bacteria and more.
Abiotic - The soil types, the water quaility, the air quaility, the amounts of stones, the amount of sunlight.
You have previously learnt the levels of organisation for an organism, this goes beyond a single organism in ecosystems.
In chemistry you would have learnt of this version of the organisation.
For ecology you need to know this version of the organisation.
An organism or an individual refers to one living thing.
A population is a group of organisms of the same species that live in the same area at the same time.
A community consists of all the different species that live in a given area.
An ecosystem consists of all organisms in the community and includes the abiotic factors.
A biosphere is every ecosystem put together (the planet earth).
Use your remaining class time to investigate one organism.
For this organism you need to tell me its:
The organism (species name, characteristics).
The organisms Population (where it can be found).
The organism's Community (what other organisms are found around it).
The organism's Ecosystem (what abiotic factors favour the organism).
What did you struggle with?
What was really easy?
What are you still curious about?
Which level are you currently sitting at in the success criteria?
