What is Love ❤️?
Romantic, passionate love
Named after the Greek god of love and fertility.
It’s all about physical attraction, sexual desire, and intense emotional connection.
Can be overpowering and often considered dangerous without balance.
Deep friendship and brotherly love
Refers to affection between equals — like loyal friends, comrades, or family members.
Emphasizes trust, loyalty, sacrifice, and shared values.
Aristotle thought Philia was necessary for a good, virtuous life.
Familial love
The natural affection between parents and children, siblings, and family members.
It’s often unconditional, growing organically rather than being earned.
Unconditional, selfless love
Often associated with spiritual love, charity, and compassion.
It’s the love that gives without expecting anything back.
Early Christians used Agape to describe God’s love for humanity.
Playful, flirtatious love
The kind of lighthearted affection found in flirting, dancing, banter, or early-stage crushes.
It’s non-committal, fun, and based more on play than deep emotion.
Enduring, practical love
Long-term love rooted in commitment, understanding, and mutual respect.
The love that matures over time — such as in a long marriage or lifelong partnership.
It’s built more on rational decision-making and effort than pure passion.
Self-love
Healthy self-respect and self-compassion.
The Greeks recognized two types:
Positive Philautia = caring for oneself in a healthy way (like self-esteem).
Negative Philautia = narcissism or selfishness (loving oneself above all others).
