Malcolm Knox is a journalist who has looked deeply into the effects of supermarkets on producers, whether they are farmers or dairy factories or pasta makers. (Read his Supermarket Monsters article).
In the drive for profits and because they are so incredible convenient, the supermarkets squeeze so hard that the following trends are common practice:
a .Less variety of product e.g. the contracts state to only grow 2 potatoes of this amount. If it doesn’t all sell the farmer must destroy.
b. Less variety of farms. Where there used to be 11 cherry orchards, now there are 2. This makes them very vulnerable.
c. Bigger monoculture farms which effects the soil which effects erosion etc.
d. Farmers do not get enough profit margin to invest in practices that lead to good quality.
e. Many farmers are doing it really tough mentally. Read the Food Connect story about a farmer who found a better way.
Coochie Foodies is part of an increasing network of producers and consumers who choose to go outside of the big supermarkets path and get real food from real people. The numbers are rising (see the other in graph).
Foodies and other food groups did NOT have a Covid buying crisis and did NOT run out of stock (not even toilet paper) because of the solid system that is in place. We did double in size and coped. Pretty good for volunteers!
