The authors’ purpose (intended message)
How are readers supposed to think/change what they do
How that message is conveyed (think rhetorical appeals - BUT DON”T SAY THEM)
Is an association created?
Are historical facts chosen for a reason?
Are personal accounts given to make audiences feel a certain way?
Is the author focusing on making himself trustworthy?
Intended audience and benefit to them
Your claim could potentially be very different depending on WHO you believe the author is targeting
BE CAREFUL - don’t just tell me what the author “shows” us - tell me WHY s/he shows that thing
Yes! Do this AFTER your claim: Develop one or more sentences that, depending on the assignment, may include the following elements:
Author and title of text(s)
Basic summary of (surface level) topics discussed
Must be related to the claim but not repetitive of it
Think: It’s like explaining the plot of the Tortoise and the Hair BEFORE you say that it was intended to convince you “slow and steady wins the race” (which would be the claim)
