Writing starts with READING. While you are reading a text for meaning, you should be keeping note of the various patterns you notice.
What ideas are repeated when you look at the information you’ve collected?
These are often single words that you will associate with ideas, but not necessarily words that appear in the text itself.
You will have at least 2 patterns, but more likely 3+
While there is never a specific number, make sure you have at least 2 pieces of evidence per pattern (as you can’t have a pattern with only one example)
Strategy: Highlight (color-code) your notes according to the patterns you’ve determined.
Often times, you will see that patterns connect and overlap. That's good - pay particular attention to these.
Decide what the author wanted to tell the reader about these patterns. One pattern could potentially have different meanings, so it is important to make this clear.
