The school nurse helps keep students healthy and safe while they are at school. He/She:
Takes care of sick students: If a child feels sick, the nurse checks them to see if they are sick. Nurses will call parents if their child is sick.
Provides first aid: Helps students with cuts, bruises, or injuries.
Gives medicine: If a child needs medicine during school, the nurse gives it (with parent permission).
Checks for health problems: May check students’ vision, hearing, or other health screenings.
Teaches healthy habits: Reminds students to wash their hands, eat healthy meals, and take care of their bodies.
Helps in emergencies: Nurses call parents or 911 if a student needs more medical care. (Example: A Student falls and gets hurt on the playground.)
If your child takes medication during school, you will need to take it to the school. Ask the school nurse what your child should do to get his or her medicine. Most schools DO NOT let students bring medication to school and keep it with them. The nurse must give the medicine.
