A fidget quilt is a soft, cozy lap quilt that provides sensory and tactile stimulation. These specially designed lap-sized quilts are adorned with various textures, colors, and interactive elements that invite touch and exploration. Many individuals with dementia or Alzheimer’s often become anxious and fidgety. Fidget quilts offer valuable sensory stimulation that can help them maintain cognitive function, improve mood, and reduce anxiety. It’s like a workout for the brain, keeping neural pathways active and engaged. Fidget quilts can also be powerful tools for emotional regulation and self-soothing by providing a familiar and comforting activity that can reduce agitation and improve mood. We make our fidget quilts with textile such as velvet, fake fur, nubby, satin, and lace, and fabrics with pictures and letters, then we add zippers, pulls, beads, braids, buttons, pom-poms, ribbons, and even pockets with crinkly material inside. We use fleece for the backing. Our fidget quilts are donated to several local facilities.
A big THANK YOU to Nancy Chandler for all her years of service with this project!
