Plastics are ubiquitous. Simple as that. What’s not simple is how they last in our environment for a very, very long time while weathering and releasing microplastics that leach into our waterways, soil and air. What’s not simple is how plastics are now known to be in our bodies via lotions, shampoos, water bottles, microwaved containers and so many other common, everyday products, causing health implications like endocrine disruption, cancer and more.
What’s also not simple is how to break our plastic habit thanks to corporate greed and associated lack of accountability for the waste stream created by their products. So what’s a person or community to do? Enter the Great Plastic Swap.
Habit breaking and habit forming is not easy. However, with a little self reflection (really?) and a little data collecting (math!) and a little determination and creativity (sound like fun yet?) perhaps we can break or at least reduce our plastic usage habits. Perhaps a communal effort will make it all a little easier and a little more fun.
If we haven’t lost you yet, continue on to an easy survey of your current plastic use and suggestions on how to start swapping out those pesky plastics!
