The Objective of the River Pathway Connections
Outdoor Community Classroom
is to -
Invoke curiosity and wonder in our youth, but really all ages.
Stimulate the senses as a way to observe and learn.
Ignite meaningful connections to the outdoors and its inhabitants.
Challenge our thinking about the natural world and our profound effect upon it, including the effects we have upon those beyond our immediate community.
Inspire creative and constructive problem solving
Thank you to the Lancaster County Community Foundation and the Lancaster Clean Water Partners for supporting our vision!
We are also grateful to the City of Lancaster, Franklin & Marshall College and especially to Lancaster Compost at Buchanan Park, Jerry Brown and Anna Smucker.
THE GOAL of the College Park Climate Action Neighborhood and its partners is to create an outdoor science classroom to be utilized by city residents, educators and citizen scientists (young and old) to help better understand the correlation between our natural world and our man-made world. Focusing on our trees, native wildlife habitat, rain gardens, composting and our waterways, including storm water drains and what flows into them, the outdoor classroom will demonstrate that our behavior is connected to the health of our ecosystem. Additionally utilizing art, signage and an on-line educational component the importance of that connection will compel us all to take action where we live.
Thank you to all of our partners, participants, artists, poets, attendees, and Mother Nature for providing a wonderful day of science, art, smoothies, fun and sun!

Corners of Buchanan and College Ave
With the encouragement of the City of Lancaster Office of Neighborhood Engagement College Park Climate Action Neighborhood applied for and received a Love Your Block Grant to install storm water drain murals on the corner of Buchanan and College Ave.
Our goal for River Pathway Connections was to bring attention to the correlation between our upstream behaviors and the downstream implications that affect our neighbors. How we manage water runoff, how we treat our lawns, how we incorporate native plants into our landscape, how we keep debris out of the city’s combined sewer system, makes a difference.
THE SIDEWALK STORM WATER DRAIN MURALS are now complete!
Be sure to visit the corners of Buchanan and College Ave to see these beautiful works of art!

With a firm belief in the importance of art as an educational tool, Krista aims to spread environmental awareness through publicly accessible art installation. Her storm drain mural, which will be located near the entrance of the North Museum, will highlight the symbiotic relationships between native plant / animal species and Pennsylvania’s waterways—bringing the public’s attention to the importance of keeping these areas free of pollution.
