修業年限・学位申請要件Period of study
博士課程は標準修業年限を4年としていますが、優れた研究業績をあげたと認められた場合、１年短縮することができます。

The PhD course typically takes four years to complete, however, for those who can get published early, it can be shortened to three years.

Our university has policies for the waiving of admission and tuition fees, and there are over a dozen scholarships to apply. Details are available from the above links (mostly in Japanese). We also have financial support via teaching assistant (TA) and research assistant (RA) policies. Based on our experiences, it is relatively easy to receive outside scholarships once get published.
International students in our lab so far have received various scholarships from our university, including the Yamaguchi University Privately Funded International Students Scholarship and Soujinkai International Student Scholarship.
Regarding living expenses here in Ube, Yamaguchi, as a graduate student living alone, the monthly rent for an apartment is typically 30,000-40,000 JPY, the cost for food per month is about 10,000-20,000 JPY (in the case of primarily self-cooking), for utility (electricity, gas, water) and mobile phone etc. around 20,000 JPY.
宇部での生活についてLife in Ube, Yamaguchi, Japan
宇部市は地方都市ではありますが、生活しやすいです。例えば、宇部市は月刊誌「田舎暮らしの本」（宝島社）が実施した2020年版「住みたい田舎」ベストランキング（人口10万人以上の大きなまち）で、総合部門で第1位をゲットしています：https://prtimes.jp/main/html/rd/p/000000021.000035835.html
また、山口大学医学部附属病院は宇部新川駅の近くにあり、周辺に大型スーパーや薬局、レストランなどがそろっています。病院から宇部空港まで車で15分程度です。宇部空港は東京羽田空港との間に一日約10往復のフライトが運航しており、片道約1.5時間程度です：JAL 4往復、ANA 3往復、SFJ 3往復。例えば、日帰りで新宿に買い物・散策に行くことも十分可能です。さらに、病院から新山口新幹線駅まで車で約40分、電車で約50分程度です。新幹線で新山口駅から博多駅まで約30分、新大阪駅まで約2時間程度です。
Although Ube is a regional city, it is comfortable to live in. According to a popular Japanese magazine, Ube was ranked No. 1 in the Best Regional Cities to Live in Japan among cities with a population over 100,000.
Our campus (together with the University Hospital) is close to the Ubeshikawa train station. Yamaguchi Ube Airport (UBJ) is about 15 minutes away by car, and there are 10 flights each day between Ube and Tokyo Haneda airport, with the one-way flight takes about one and a half hours. The bullet train station Shin Yamaguchi is about 40 minutes away by car and 50 minutes away by the local train. From Shin Yamaguchi, you can easily access Fukuoka (about 30 minutes away) and Osaka (about 2 hours away).
