The way I like to dial in single serve is by looking at the bed after the brew is done and making adjustments based on what I am tasting. For instance; every pulse of water induces agitation into the bed of coffee. Are there 3 big holes in the bed? If so, I know that the water is drawing down too fast for the next pulse. I can either grind finer, or shorten the wait time between the pulses. Looking at it like this, I can usually find the sweet spot of timing and grind size.
