The Confucius Institute of Valparaiso (CIVU) is going to hold a concert themed "Friendship Lasts Forever" at Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park, Chicago, Illinois on Sunday, September 17, 2017, 2:30 - 5:00 PM.
If you'd like to bring your students to the event, your students will be asked to sing along the following 4 songs (See attached.) in Chinese and English at the end of the concert. Please practice the 4 songs with your students.
1) 《茉莉花》 (Jasmine)
2) 《好汉歌》 (Song of Heroes)
3) 《欢乐颂》 (Ode to Joy)
4) 《友谊地长天久》(Auld Lang Syne)
This event is open free to all schools and the public. In order for us to prepare well, if you're planning to bring your students to the events, please respond to this message before July 15, 2017 by E-mail CIVU.

Introduction:The Chinese and Japanese Studies Program (CJS) and the Confucius Institute of Valparaiso University (CIVU) are proud to sponsor the 9th Valparaiso University Great Lakes High School Chinese Speech Contest. We invite high school students from Illinois and Indiana to gather together on Valparaiso University's campus to display their Chinese language skills in a good-spirited competition. Students' performance will be evaluated by a panel made up of eight Chinese language teachers and distinguished Chinese speakers from local communities. The competition will be followed by an awards ceremony and a celebratory dinner!
There will be Chinese cultural performances during the intermission. Students will be grouped and judged these levels:
Spoken Chinese Level 1: For students with less than two years of high school Chinese language study. They will do conversational dialogues in groups of two to four contestants on topics related to daily life.
Spoken Chinese Level 2: For students with more than two years of high school Chinese language study. They will deliver individual speeches on topics such as “我在美国学中文” or “我第一次去中国.”
Spoken Chinese Level 3: For heritage students only. Same format as Level 2. Written Chinese 1: For students with less than two years of high School Chinese. Participants will complete a dialogue (with at least 30 characters) from one of the two topics provided.
Written Chinese 2 and 3: For students with more than two years of a good-spirited competition. high School Chinese or are heritage students. Participants will complete two short paragraphs
Talent show:For students who have Chinese talent which including Chinese music and art.

DATES
July 6 - July 7, 2017: one-hour online orientation in the morning each day
July 10 - 20, 2017: one-hour online learning in the morning per day except Sunday, July 16
LOCATION
Students learn online in different geographical regions in the US whereas teachers teach online at the University of Virginia.
ELIGIBILITY
Rising 9-12th graders who have completed Level II, III or the equivalent. They should be able to use simple sentences to exchange ideas on some familiar topics about school, family, and life experiences.
CLASS SCHEDULE
The program offers two online sessions: 9:30-10:30AM & 11:30AM-12:30PM in the Eastern Standard Time. Selected students will be placed into one of the two synchronous sessions and be fully committed to 2-3 hours of self-paced learning per day.
CLASS SIZE
Class size is extremely small and catered to individual needs. The ratio of teacher to students ranges from 1:1 to 1:2.
INSTRUCTORS
Teachers have demonstrated excellence in teaching Chinese language and culture in post-secondary and secondary schools in the U.S. They are selected excellent teachers in the Virginia STARTALK Chinese Teacher Academy.
PROGRAM FEE
Students do not need to pay any program fee. All costs are covered by the program.
GIFT CARD
Students who fully participate in the program and complete the participation requirements will receive a gift card at the amount of up to $50.00 after the end of the program.
CERTIFICATE OF EXCELLENCE IN LEARNING
The program offers no credits but well recognizes efforts in excellent learning. Those who fully participate in the program, successfully complete curricular requirements, and demonstrate a strong desire to exert full potential in learning will receive a Certificate of Excellence in Learning after the end of the program.
