The main feature of the Convention is that it links together in a single document the concepts of nature conservation and the preservation of cultural properties.
The Convention recognizes the way in which people interact with nature, and the fundamental need to preserve the balance between the two.
Thus, a central core is the idea of preservation of landscape.
The images on the right show the Meteora monasteries in Greece and the Honghe Hani Rice Terraces in China.
Moreover, the Convention is not only interested in nature nor only in monuments, but in the way different cultures of all times interacted with the environment they lived in, during the whole history of mankind, from Pre-History to Modern times.
The images on the right show the Altamira caves in Spain and the Cathedral of Notre Dame des Champs by Le Corbusier in France.
