The word heritage is crucial in this module, but also to understand Art History and related topics as preservation.
Let's discuss together about it.
What does it mean?
Why is it used?
Do we have a similar term in Italian?
Heritage is a term coming from Law; if you check on the Oxford Dictionary, the first definition is
"Property that is or may be inherited; an inheritance."
Such term is therefore also connected with the idea of value, and of potential economic exploitation.
In Italy, during the 1980s, we used the term beni culturali (especially in laws and regulations).
Nevertheless we can see some differences:
Heritage is a single collective name: a single heritage contains many different items somehow related.
Beni does not bring this idea of relation among items: the traditional idea of single art pieces and monuments was still prevailing.
Since the 2000s, in Italy the term patrimonio culturale has been used.
This way we are able to express the idea of a complex setting of items and we also highlight the concept of something valuable.
