I think one of the most important aspects of a classroom is a sense of support and belonging. As a teacher it is my job to know all of my students and recognize their differences in learning styles, hobbies, personalities, etc. A procedure that I have seen in my fields placements that promotes inclusion is a greeting and goodbye routine. This routine happens at the begining and end of every school day and consists of student teacher acknowledgement as well as a little motion or handshake that is recognized as a greeting or goodbye. I have created the poster below to be the first thing that students see when they walk into the classroom in the morning and the last thing they see before they exit the classroom at the end of the day. At the beginning and end of the day students will point to the motion or handshake that they want to partake in we will use it as a greeting or goodbye.
This greetings and goodbyes poster will be displayed at the classroom door as the first thing students see when they walk into the classroom and the last thing they see when they are leaving the classroom. At the beginning and end of the day students will point to one of the greetings or goodbyes and interact with their teachers using one of the motions. This poster relates to my philosophy because it makes all students feel seen and supported first thing in the morning and the last part of the school day. These greetings and goodbyes are a great way to promote student teacher relationships as well as create boundaries.
The classroom jobs poster will be displayed in the classroom for all of the students to see. Each week every student will be assigned a classroom job to participate in to help the organization and overall flow of the classroom. The jobs will be switched every week in order for all of the students to experience all of the jobs. Switching the jobs every week also helps avoid any fights. The classroom jobs help students develop a sense of responsibility which is a common theme throughout my classroom. I want students to learn through experiences and having jobs throughout the day is a great way to understand organization and working as a team.
In order to create organization when students are handing in their papers there will be different hand in bins. Each subject will have its own bin. When students are asked to turn in a math assignment they will put it in the math bin, etc. This creates a sense of accountability and organization for the students and makes it easy to grade specific assignments. One of my biggest goals for my future classroom is to be organized and supportive of all of my students. Having these turn in bins will make both my students and my life easier throughout the school year.
When students who have been absent return to school they will receive an absent folder. This folder contains any worksheets, directions, or materials needed in order to complete the work they missed while they were out. This folder can be taken out during any free time during class that students would like to work on assignments or it can be taken home to work on. This helps keep missing assignments accessible and organized for both the teacher and students. This absent folder will make it a lot easier for students to catch up on work when they return to school. Instead of having to ask me what they missed they can just grab the folder and look at what they need to make up!
I will have a binder in my classroom that will be left for the substitute anytime I am out of the classroom. This binder will include information such as daily schedules, fire drill/ lockdown drill procedures, class list, lesson plans, expectations, daily routine, worksheets, resources, etc. This can be used as a guide for substitutes in order to navigate the classroom and feel confident throughout the day. This binder will make the substitutes life a little bit easier which will benefit my students.
