When organizing and creating my classroom I kept the philosophy of some specific theorists in mind. Some of the theorists and their ideas that I based my classroom setup off of are Kounin, Glasser, and Kohn. I find it very important for the teacher to be able to assess the classroom and see their students at all times. I chose to place my desk in the corner of the classroom furthest from the entrance and exit in order to be able to see the flow off traffic and the landscape of the classroom during transitions. I also believe that grouping desks in pods helps keep the classroom organized and allows students to interact and learn from their peers. I made sure to mention that the groups are made up of flexible seating in order to allow students to be as comfortable as possible throughout the school day. The books, storage and materials (pencil sharpener, charging station), are located in front of a window and near the entrance and exit of the classroom for maximum space as well as smooth transitions.
Classroom Wall Art
Classroom management procedures and strategies can be displayed in many different ways throughout the classroom. One of the most important classroom management strategies that teachers can use is classroom jobs. Assigning students classroom jobs is a great way to help them develop responsibility and understand that the classroom is a community to which they all contribute to. When students are held accountable for helping the school day run smoothly it allows them to understand the importance of working together and creating an environment that welcomes everyone. In my classroom, the student's classroom jobs will be displayed on the board for everyone to see. On the first day of school we will sit down as a class and determine what jobs we think will be important for our classroom to function. The classroom jobs will be changed weekly to ensure that every student gets a chance to do all of the jobs!
It can be very beneficial to have different supports and strategies related to standards and curriculmn displayed throughout the classroom. Having academic resources displayed for students to reference throughout the school day can be very helpful for guiding their learning. One of the posters I will have displayed in my classroom is the alphabet (both upper and lower case letters). The letters will be displayed in a place that all students are able to see and reference throughout the school day (above the smart board). This can help students with phonemic awareness and letter recognition. The poster will also have pictures of different animals or objects that relate to the letters in order to help studentds make connections.
One of the most important aspects of a classroom is a sense of inclusion and community. Every student should feel supported and seen within their classroom environment. Something that I have seen in my field experiences and will definitely implement in my future classroom is displaying students' works throughout the classroom. Having a space where students can look at their hard work as well as their peer's work is a great way to motivate students throughout the school year.
The classroom setup that I have created will be accessible for all types of learners. The floorspace will be organized and setup in a way that promotes students engagment and eliminates as many distractions as possible. Some of the materials that I have chosen to incorporate into my classroom, such as bookshelves, flexible seating, etc. can help guide overall organization and movement throughout the day. Other resources and decor that I have decided to incorporate into my classroom such as the wow work wall, letter posters, and classroom jobs poster help with student motivation, building community/ relationships, management, and expectations. All students needs will be met in this classroom in order to create a safe and engaging space!
