Some core values our group has taken away from both this course and the alternative break experience are as follows:
Leadership through Active Citizenship:
One can value their leadership by taking on the qualities of a volunteer, member, and conscientious citizen. This involves communication, general devotion to a community of individuals, and the characteristics of a member or leader. Active citizenship strives to advocate for others through discussion of diverse issues and changes recommended towards the environment and benefit of others. This can be seen through the actions of individuals working within the Guest House Cream City Gardens.
Cream City Gardens: "Fresh, home-grown produce to the Guest House, our neighbors, and the network of food pantries so that families in need have access to fresh produce."
Through our actions as individuals and active citizens we can come together as a group, providing each other the emotional comfort and stability needed for every day life. While working at Repairers of the Breach, the atmosphere seemed more of a community home for the people who are homeless to enjoy. One can be a part of numerous communities. With a community comes an inclusive environment of collaborators and hopefully equity. It is important that all people find a home, community, or somewhere they can fall back to.
"State of endurance under difficult circumstances"
What is the difference between Service Learning & Community Service?
While at "Feeding America", we sorted through 9,748 lbs. of food items as a team in a short number of hours. This required patience and teamwork, organizing and shifting through the various food products and groups served to the local community. At Guest House, we made and packed over 200+ brown bag lunches for the local community shelter and visitors. We also created cards to be given to the clients of the Guest House who were celebrating birthdays or other significant milestones. With patience, comes service learning. While at Pathfinders South Eastern Education Center, we were able to talk with the faculty and staff about the school and home environments faced by their students. It is important to integrate yourself completely into your service, through community work and educational experiences to further educate others towards a common good.
Patience is key as an individual, allowing space for change and being open minded towards what life has to offer.
