Milwaukee is home to a very diverse population. From the 2010 Census:
Total Population (as of 2015) - 600,155 people
Our group experienced different culture through street art, and the art museum we visited.
Left: Mural found at Pathfinders - one of our site partners. (We were lucky to see some of this process before our eyes).
Right: Titled "Fly Boy" found in Black Cat Alley.
Cultural Identity is a feeling of belonging. It includes a shared feeling of beliefs, interest, and basic principles of living. The art not only spoke about the culture identity of Milwaukee as a whole but of the very places where we served.
Mural located in the Milwaukee's Guest House painted by a man named Larry. Larry resided at the Guest House when he was experiencing homelessness.
The painting might show a stereotypical portrayal of people experiencing homelessness, but to the Guest House and Larry, these people are experiencing a sense of community and culture. They are a group of people who have been the victim of negative life altering events that has landed them on the street. They experience extreme poverty and a lack of housing or whose residence includes a temporary shelter at night. The stress of their living conditions can lead them to be involved with alcohol and drugs. However, they value things such as safety, friendship, basic necessities and hope. They are men who may not have much but what they do have is each other's backs and they feel safe together.
