There are distance posts at about 500m intervals along all major hiking trails including MacLehose Trail, Lantau Trail, Hong Kong Trail, Wilson Trail and all country trails. In case of emergency, just refer to the numbers on the nearby distance post or the coordinates marked at the location map and provide to the rescuer, it can speed up their rescue operation.
Besides, the government has set up “50222 SMS/ GPS Hiker Tracking Service”. To ask for rescue, just punch in the numbers of distance posts and send to 50222 via SMS or by the GPS Hiker Tracking Services of the “Enjoy Hiking” mobile phone application.
A whistle, flag, colourful clothes, mirror, torch or headlamp can send an signal to call for help.
Issue six times the signal within a minute, pause for a minute. For example by whistle, blow six long blasts. Then wait for the rescuer to respond. Repeat the same procedure until you have seen the rescuer.
When the victim pause, send three times the signal and pause for a minute. Wait for the victim to respond; again repeat until the rescuer have seen the victim.
