C. Foster & Brother

C. Foster & Brother was established by Charles and James Foster around 1849. In 1853, the Charles left the company and it became the James D. Foster & Co.

Foster & Co. manufactured several different models of presses, but is best known for their unique design of an iron hand press, often referred to as the "Foster" press. This press lifted the type up into the paper versus the traditional method of pressing the paper down onto the type.

In 1859, the company was sold to W. T. & S. D. Day & Co., who continued to manufacture presses until 1864.
