STEM Discovery Week 2019 is a joint international initiative that invites projects, organisations and schools across Europe and around the world, to celebrate careers and studies in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). The tagline for this year’s campaign is “best practices in using innovative STEM resources”. The primary focus of this year's campaign, is to showcase how teaching materials and other learning resources are used in educational activities.

In our School, IES Menéndez Pidal and in our Science and Technology Club (Zalatecno) we are using innovative resourses and participating in innovative projects that we would like to share with other schools across the world.

We share one of our projects "Deseño e Son" with schools of special needs, asking for their contribution, selecting materials with or for their students.

The lessons have been integrated into the school curriculum.

IES MENÉNDEZ PIDAL has been recognised as a Partner School for our activities for STEM Discovery Week 2019.

Print 3D to help people with special needs.

As part of the Project "Deseño e Son" (Design and Sound) some of our students (13-16) are using technology and more specifically 3D printers to design and print objects to help people with special needs ( visually impaired for example).

We share this project with schools with students with special needs, asking for their contribution, selecting materials with or for them.

Design and 3D print maps of our town to help visually impaired

For STEM Discovery Week in April we used Touch Mapper – a web tool to create tactile maps of our town and we printed them.

The maps are being shown in technology fairs and checked by ONCE (Spanish organization to help visually impaired people)

Design and 3D print floor maps of theatres of our town to help visually impaired

We used Image files transformed into polygons in Draws of Drive and into 3D files using Freecad to create tactile floor maps of singular places, theatres in our town and we printed them.

The floor maps are being shown in technology fairs and checked by ONCE (Spanish organization to help visually impaired people)

Design and 3D print objects to help visually impaired

Using Freecad we made our own designs for games and for objects that can be useful to help other people.
