We are not makers of history. We are made by history. ~ Martin Luther King Jr.
Reflecting on my teaching philosophy, I realised how my own history shaped this philosophy. For example, my mother was also a teacher and would often involve us as children in her teaching practices. When I was still an undergraduate student, I decided I would like to pursue a career in academia. (I was later told this was a very early revelation.) Once I finished my undergraduate studies, and immediately started my postgraduate studies, all at Stellenbosch University. I finished a Master's degree and was faced with the choice between a career in academia or a career in the private sector. I was offered a full-time scholarship in PhD and no job offers in the private sector - the path became clear. Shortly after the completion of my PhD, I spent a short time as a postdoctoral student at North-West University, before being offered a full-time position at the University of the Western Cape. I started this position in 2017 as a lecturer and was promoted to senior lecturer in 2019.
