Research is formalised curiosity. It is poking and prying with a purpose - Zora Neale Hurston
I am an economic historian. Economic history is a developing field of economics, especially in the South African context. I am often asked what it means to be an economic historian and an easy way to describe what an economic historian does is to say we use modern concepts of economics and econometrics and combine this with historical events and narratives. What is interesting about the combination of the two fields is how often modern economic events have similarities with past events. It is through these similarities or differences which we can learn from. One of the main lessons I have learned from economic history is that our history shapes us.
