Resource Guide for Christian Art in Modern Japan

はじめに

　このウェブサイトでは、近代日本のキリスト教美術に関する資料の情報を掲載していきます。

　近代日本美術において、キリスト教の影響は比較的少ないように思われてきましたが、実際には様々な美術家たちがキリスト教の影響を受けたり、キリスト教主題の作品を手がけたりしており、その中には日本国内よりも海外で評価された美術家たちもいました。また、日本におけるキリスト教の文化受容に関して考察している国内外の批評家や神学者たちの中には、美術についても関心をもって論じてきた人たちがいます。

　本サイトは、これまで情報が分散しがちだった近代日本のキリスト教美術について、情報を集積し、公開することで、この分野へ関心があるみなさまへ共有できればと思い、2025年に開設しました。2015年以来、国内外の図書館や文書館で調査してきた内容に基づいて、その研究成果の一端を可能な範囲で公開しています。そのため、本サイトそれ自体で完結する読み物というより、導入的な情報や、関心をもった人がさらに調べるための文献情報や資料リストを提供するというかたちになっています。

　何をもって、「キリスト教美術」とするかは議論の余地があるところですが、キリスト教主題の作品、教会美術として制作された作品、キリスト教の文脈で受容された作品、キリスト教信仰をもつ作者が信仰との関連において制作した作品などを、とりあえずは扱っていくこととします。また、日本人だけでなく、関わりのあった他の国出身の美術家や著述家についても言及しています。

　なお、本サイトの内容は、近代日本キリスト教美術が広範におよぶテーマのため、包括的・網羅的な内容にはなっておらず、現時点では、カトリック関係の美術家たちに関する情報が多くなっています。その他の美術家たちや活動についても順次追加していければと思っています。

Introduction

　This website provides information on materials related to Christian art in modern Japan.

　Although Christian influence has often been considered limited in modern Japanese art, many artists were in fact shaped by Christianity or created works on Christian themes—some of whom gained greater recognition abroad than in Japan. A number of critics and theologians, both Japanese and international, have also examined how Christianity was received in Japan and discussed its relationship to the visual arts.

　Launched in 2025, this website aims to bring together and share information on Christian art in modern Japan, a field in which sources have not been easily accessible in a single place, and to support further interest and research. It presents part of the findings from research conducted since 2015 in libraries and archives in Japan and abroad. For this reason, the website is not a self-contained resource; rather, it offers introductory information along with references and lists of materials for those who wish to explore the subject further.

　What constitutes “Christian art” is open to debate, but this website provisionally covers works with Christian themes; works created for churches or received within Christian contexts; and works by Christian artists made in relation to their faith. It also addresses not only Japanese artists and writers but also foreign figures connected to this field.

　Because Christian art in modern Japan is a wide-ranging topic, the website is not comprehensive, and at present it contains more information on Catholic artists. Other artists and activities will be added over time.

　このウェブサイトは、美術史研究者・古沢ゆりあが、個人で試験的に運営しているものです。内容は、随時、更新・修正していきます。

　掲載内容は、基本的に公表されている情報に基づき、掲載する画像や文章は、著作権保護期間の満了しているもの、または掲載許諾が得られたもの、それ以外は引用の範囲内での掲載としています。

　美術家や論者については、過去の人物の場合は敬称略としています。資料の歴史的仮名遣いや旧字体は、今のところ改めているものと、そうでないものがあります（検索の利便性のためいずれ統一する予定）。

This website is run by Yuria Furusawa, a Japanese art historian specializing in Asian Christian art. The content may be added, changed, or updated from time to time.

All information provided here is based mainly on publicly available sources. Images and texts on this site are either in the public domain, used with permission, or included within the scope of fair quotation.

At the moment, there is not much content available in English, but if you can read basic Japanese, you should be able to access most of the information.

Honorifics are omitted for historical artists and authors. As for historical kana usage and old character forms, some have been modernized while others have been left as they are.

While every effort has been made to ensure accuracy, typographical errors and mistranslations may still occur. If you wish to quote or reproduce any material from this website, please check the original sources listed and cite or reproduce from them rather than from this website.
